Abstract
Aim: The aim of this study is to investigate the patients’quality of life related to chronic otitis media (COM) symptoms by using 36-item Short-Form Health Survey(SF-36). Material and Method: Fifty patients with COM and 50 healthy control subjects who were similar to the study group in terms of age, gender, education and marital status were included in the study. Demographical data including age, gender, education status, and marital status of all participants were recorded. All participants completed SF-36 to evaluate health related quality of life. Results: The patients with COM reported significantly lower levels of life quality in terms of physical functioning, physical role difficulty, vitality, social functioning, and emotional role difficulty than control subjects. The COM patients with hearing loss(HL) having additional symptoms (ear discharge and/or tinnitus) reported significantly lower levels of life quality in terms of emotional role difficulty only whereas the other terms were similar. The life quality outcomes of COM patients according to their HL severity did not show any statistically significant difference. Discussion: Patients with COM seem to have poorer quality of life that are most probably related with HL rather than some accompanying and disturbing complaints including tinnitus or ear discharge. Otorhinolaryngologists should keep in their mind that these patients may need psychosocial support to imporve their quality of life.

Abstract
Aim: The aim of this study is to assess the correlation between oral hygiene habits and nutritional habits in patients with halitosis. Material and Method: 50 subjects with a complaint of halitosis and 50 subjects with normal otorhinolaryngologic examination completed the study. A self administered questionnaire was used to assess the prevalence of oral hygiene habits including teeth brushing, tooth brush changing period, flossing, tongue cleaning, use of mouthwash, and smoking habits. To assess the nutritional habits of the subjects, food consumption frequency questionnaire was used. Results: The patients with halitosis were brushing their teeth, changing their tooth brush, using a dental floss, cleaning their tongue and using mouthwash more rarely than control group. 82% of halitosis group and 52% of control group were smokers. The difference was statistically significant. The halitosis group consumed milk and milk products, meat and meat products, tea and fizzdrinks, pickles, spices, ketchup more frequently. Discussion: Oral hygiene habits and nutritional habits may have a role on ocurrence of bad breath. So we are of the opinion that the improvement of oral hygiene habits and elimination of the risky nourishments may be the first step of the treatment period.

Complicated Pulmonary Hydatid Cysts

DOI: 10.4328/ECAM.38
To the editor:
In terms of being endemic in our country, hydatid cyst still constitutes a major clinical issue. To enrich the literature with new researchs and reviews on hydatid cysts is very useful. We read with interest Tokur and colleagues’s review titled “Complicated hydatid cyst of the lung”. Although this review strengthens the literature and summarizes the complications of pulmonary hydatid cysts quite well, we need to add our opinions on some points. One point we want to specify is the classification of complications. As is known, surgical procedures to pulmonary hydatid cysts may result in complications. In this respect, classifying the complications as preoperative and postoperative complications would be a more accurate approach according to us. Another point we want to mention is that figures do not take place in the text. If a more detailed description of the figures had been made, the pictures would have been more meaningful and useful. For example; images of a pulmonary embolism case due to hydatid cyst, which is a rare condition, were given in Figures 8 and 9, but there is no adequate explanation about the phenomenon and the figures did not reach their objective. As a result, we suggest that Tokur and colleagues’s review about this important issue, would be useful for clinicians. We want to emphasize the necessity of new researches about hydatid cyst, which is still an important clinical entity in our country.
