Abstract

Aim: After the declaration of the pandemic by the World Health Organization on March 11, 2020, COVID-19 has caused a far-reaching change that is difficult to adapt to in formal medical education. In the educational process, it may have led the anesthesiology residents to complete their deficiencies with alternative learning options. The aim of this study was to investigate the change in social media usage habits of anesthesia residents for academic and educational purposes during the pandemic era.

Material and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted from April to May 2020 with voluntary participation of anesthesiology residents using an online self-administered Google forms software-based questionnaire consisting of twenty questions.

Results: There was an increase in the use of social media for academic development in 39.7% of anesthesiologists (Group 1), no change in 45.5% (Group2), and a decrease in 14.8% (Group 3) during the pandemic period compared to the pre-pandemic period. In the comparison between the groups, those who have heard the announcements of national and international electronic scientific meetings from social media (p=0.016) were found to be significantly higher in Group 1. Also, the number of participants whose frequency of attending electronic scientific meetings was significantly higher in Group 1(p=0.005). The rate of Instagram and Youtube usage was also found to be significantly higher in Group 1 (p= 0.046 and p<0.001, respectively).

Discussion: During the pandemic period, medical education and residency training programs through social media have enabled many people who are against social media to get closer to social media and use it effectively.

Abstract

In recent years, due to the harms of synthetic-added foods, consumers are turning to food products that contain natural food additives, less processed, safer, healthier and have a longer shelf life. Therefore, the food industry has focused on finding natural compounds as an alternative to synthetic food additives, both to meet the new demands of consumers and to increase market competitiveness. Due to these natural pursuits, medicinal and aromatic plants have found an increasingly widespread use in food production. The rich nutritional content of medicinal and aromatic plants, high antioxidant capacity and functional properties such as antimicrobial enable these plants to be widely used in the food industry for their natural additive and protective effect. Therefore, the production of medicinal and aromatic plants and products obtained from these plants is constantly increasing throughout the world. Organic food and functional food production is carried out by incorporating various extracts of natural medicinal and aromatic plants with proven natural health benefits into food formulations. The abundance of bioactive compounds and cost-effective sources, especially in medicinal and aromatic plants, facilitate the use of these plants in minimally processed food products. Within the scope of this study, information about their use as spices, herbal tea, food supplements and food additives, which are the most common forms of use in the food industry, were presented in line with their functional properties.

Abstract

Cardiopulmonary bypass, which allows cardiac interventions, is a standard perfusion technique used in cardiac surgery, which provides cardiac arrest by using cardioplegic solutions and oxygenates the blood outside the body through extracorporeal circulation and redirects blood back to the patient. With the use of cardiopulmonary bypass technique, serious complications may develop in the perioperative and postoperative periods. One of the most important of these developing complications is kidney damage. New biomarkers that will enable the early detection of this developing kidney damage are being investigated, one of which is NRF-2. Our aim in this review article is to investigate current information about NRF-2 and to identify the role factors associated with kidney damage.

Abstract

There are not enough studies on the benefits and harms of traditional and uniform dietary restriction in dialysis patients. For example, many studies show that restriction of phosphorus in the diet of dialysis patients may lead to a worse nutritional status and will have a worse process. In addition, the restriction of potassium in the diet may deprive dialysis patients of healthy diets related to the heart. This may lead to the intake of more atherogenic diets. Another important point is that there is little data on the benefits of dietary sodium restriction for dialysis patients. Also, limiting fluid intake in dialysis patients who need protein may naturally lead to lower protein and calorie consumption. In diabetic dialysis patients, who are also wrong about carbohydrate intake, this situation may cause harm instead of benefit. Since dietary fat containing omega-3 fatty acids can be important sources of calories for dialysis patients, it is not very correct to restrict it. Also, data to justify other dietary restrictions on calcium, vitamins, and trace elements in dialysis patients are scarce, and this is often contradictory. Recently, the concept of renal rehabilitation, which includes exercise and nutrition programs for patients with chronic kidney disease, has become popular. Renal rehabilitation, which includes both nutrition and physical activity, has beneficial effects on the patient’s physical ability and quality of life in dialysis patients. In this review, information about what should be done in the diets applied in dialysis patients, the mistakes made and renal rehabilitation are given.
